Of all the teams to find a spot in the Top 25 of the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, perhaps no team surprised with its placement more than Penn State.
Though ranked No. 20 in the AP Poll and No. 23 in the Coaches Poll, the Nittany Lions came in No. 12 in the playoff rankings.
Why? Selection committee chairman Kirby Hocutt explained.
“Penn State has played a strong schedule. Obviously, a big win over Ohio State. Four of their six wins have been against teams with a winning record. So, Penn State in the eyes of the committee, our discussion over the last few days, we’ve taken long looks at the schedule that they played and we’re very impressed with their improvement and also their quality of wins.”
Along with beating No. 6 Ohio State, Penn State has beaten 6-3 Temple, 6-2 Minnesota and 5-3 Maryland. The Nittany Lions have lost to No. 3 Michigan and 5-3 Pitt.
