Franklin has guided the Nitttany Lions to an 11-2 season, a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl berth as the No. 5 team in the nation, nearly getting into the College Football Playoff.
He’s the first Lions coach to be a finalist for the award since Bill O’Brien in 2012, and the eighth Lions coach overall to be tabbed as a finalist.
The other finalists were Western Michigan’s P.J. Fleck, Alabama’s Nick Saban, Colorado’s Mike MacIntyre and Washington’s Chris Petersen. The winner of the award will be announced on Jan. 7 in Tampa.
