An estimated 500 Penn State football lettermen are expected back in State College this weekend.
They will be holding a reunion on Friday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joe Paterno’s first game as head coach, according to the Allentown Morning Call. The university will commemorate the anniversary at some point during the Nittany Lions’ noon game against Temple on Saturday.
The reunion, organized by lettermen spanning Paterno’s entire Penn State career as head coach, is not affiliated with the school. It will be a “celebration of [the players’] contributions to The Grand Experiment and its Golden Legacy of academic and athletic excellence that became a national model,” Paterno family spokesperson Dan McGinn told the Morning Call in a statement.
The university has still not released specific details about Saturday’s commemoration at Beaver Stadium.
