Penn State-Marquette basketball preview

The No. 4-seeded Nittany Lions are fresh off an upset over No. 1-seeded Notre Dame on Saturday. They will look to pull off another upset as they will take the court against the Golden Eagles, who are ranked a No. 2 seed in the NIT Tournament.

Penn State and Marquette are both coming off solid all-around regular seasons, as the Nittany Lions enter with an overall record of 23-13 while the Golden Eagles enter play with a record of 21-13.

As previously mentioned, Penn State defeated No. 1 Notre Dame, 73-63, in the second round of the NIT Tournament on Saturday. In that game, the Nittany Lions were led by sophomore guard Austin Carr, who scored a game-high 24 points and added 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block in the victory. Carr has been the Lions’ best player this season, and in order for them to advance further in the NIT, they will need him to continue to play at a very high level.

The Nittany Lions were shorthanded against Notre Dame, and they will once again be shorthanded against Marquette. According to a report by 247Sports’ Andrew Callahan on Monday, center Mike Watkins will not play the rest of the season and guard Nazeer Bostick will be a game-time decision for the Nittany Lions.

Watkins has been out since Feb. 21 with a knee injury, while Bostick was suspended for a violation of team rules after he was charged with a misdemeanor possession of marijuana on Thursday. Bostick did not play against Notre Dame.

Despite missing some of its players, Penn State got the job done against Notre Dame. Prior to that, the Nittany Lions defeated Temple, 63-57, in the first round of the tournament.

On the other side, Marquette is coming off a 101-92 victory over No. 3-seeded Oregon on Sunday. Marquette senior guard Andrew Rowsey led the way with 29 points off the bench in the win. In addition, Rowsey dished out 9 assists and added 1 steal.

The winner of the Penn State vs. Marquette game will advance to the NIT semifinals, where it will take on the winner of Mississippi State and Louisville. Mississippi State and Louisville also play on Tuesday night.
