Penn State basketball is headed to the 2018 NIT Championship Game thanks to a 75-60 shellacking of Mississippi State on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
The Nittany Lions were in control for much of the second half, but that was thanks in large part to a 24-0 run in the first half spurred by Tony Carr and Shep Garner. That put fourth-seeded Penn State up in dominant fashion over the fellow 4-seed Bulldogs.
Then, they simply kept pouring on.
And while the win may be the highlight of the night, a close second was Garner’s record-setting performance. The senior guard set the Penn State all-time record for career 3-pointers with his first triple of the second half.
He passed Pete Lisicky to do it.
Garner finished with 18 points — all points coming on 6 made 3-point shots — while Carr scored a game-high 21.
Lamar Stevens also had a fantastic game with some thunderous dunks en route to 17 points. He and freshman John Harrar had strong days on the glass, combining for 15 rebounds.
On the other side, Tyson Carter led the way with 19 points off the bench for Mississippi State.
Here is the full box score.
The Bulldogs end their season at 25-12, while the 25-13 Nittany Lions will play second-seeded Utah for the title at 7 p.m. ET Thursday night. The Utes (23-11) beat 4-seed Western Kentucky 69-64 in the other semifinal Tuesday night.
