Penn State went into halftime of the 2018 NIT semifinals with a very comfortable 42-23 lead over Mississippi State on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
That’s thanks to a 24-0 run capped by Shep Garner tying the Nittany Lion all-time record for career 3-pointers.
Starting at 2:55 to go in the first quarter, the Lions held the Bulldogs scoreless for over seven minutes while their offense exploded.
Garner, Tony Carr, Josh Reaves and Lamar Stevens all knocked down 3’s, while Carr also had a vicious dunk in the stretch.
Meanwhile, the defense played ferociously, cleaning up the glass on both ends, forcing tough shots and more importantly, forcing turnovers.
In the stretch, Garner had nine points on three triples, while Carr had eight on a jumper, a 3 and a dunk.
Garner is now just one away from surpassing Lisicky for the school record. The two are currently tied at 332. The senior was four-of-six from beyond the arc before halftime.
Here is the box score so far.
