COLUMBUS, Ohio – First there was ‘The Chase.’ Then came ‘The Grind.’ And now Ohio State has its newest motto, just in time for the start of fall camp.
Coach Urban Meyer began his Sunday post-practice news conference by unveiling “The Edge” as the mantra for his 2016 squad.
“ ‘The Edge’ is where average stops and elite begins,” he said. “The great players we’ve been around and individuals, when they become their best is when it gets real hard. The average person, the average player, that’s when they kind of shutter down because it gets real hard and uncomfortable. That’s where the elite starts to take off.”
Junior quarterback J.T. Barrett was asked for his interpretation and used last year’s Indiana game as an example of some players reaching the breaking point only to fight through it and deliver a victory. A goal-line stand late in the final seconds helped propel the Buckeyes to a tough 34-27 victory in Bloomington.
“For me and for a lot of my teammates I think it’s something that hits home, being that everybody can be pushed to a certain point,” Barrett said.
“Wherever that point may be – and it’s different for each individual – you have to find a way to get through that,” he said. “You can’t do it by yourself, and a lot of times you don’t do it for yourself. You do it for your teammates and I guess the bigger cause, something bigger than yourself. I think that’s something everybody is pushing toward. You don’t know when that point is going to come. You feel like you can’t go any further but you realize it’s bigger than yourself, and that gives you the extra motivation and push to get beyond that and become elite.”
The newest expression replaces “The Grind,” a somewhat embattled slogan due to what some felt became a self-fulfilling prophecy. While “The Chase” got a second crack at success after coming up short in 2013, there will be no repeat effort for “The Grind.” That could be in part because of circumstances, however, as 2015 buzzword arrived as an answer to the difficulty of defending a national championship – something the Buckeyes won’t be doing this fall.
Meyer and Barrett have both endorsed “The Edge,” but it remains to be seen whether fans will embrace it. So do you long for a return to “The Chase?” Do you pine for “The Grind?” Or is “The Edge” exactly what you’re looking for? Cast a vote below for your favorite seasonal theme. (Spring 2016’s Land of the Wolves motif was excluded both because it wasn’t exclusive to a football season and because polls aren’t meant to be unanimous).
