FootballScoop.com is reporting that LSU will at least “gauge the interest” of Ohio State coach Urban Meyer and other top coaches in college football. That, apparently, also includes Alabama’s Nick Saban.
Yeah, good luck with that.
If Orgeron doesn’t earn the job, sources tell FootballScoop that LSU’s committee believes they can and should land a home run. “Their sights are on national championship caliber, proven head coaches,” a source with knowledge told FootballScoop this morning. During the initial, exploratory phase, we are told to expect LSU, through representatives, to gauge the interest of some of the top coaches in college football, including Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Jimbo Fisher and Tom Herman.
Of course, there’s really no harm in at least reaching out and seeing what Meyer has to say — otherwise you’re taking yourself out of the running before even asking. But just because LSU may be trying to see what Meyer thinks about the job opening, that doesn’t mean the Tigers think they have a shot.
Meyer is obviously comfortable at Ohio State. He’s a ridiculous 53-4 with the Buckeyes, including an undefeated season in 2012 and a national championship in 2014. The Buckeyes are also currently ranked No. 2 in the country after three blowout wins to start the season.
Meyer led Florida to a pair of national titles during his time in the SEC, but there’s no reason to think he’s going back there or anywhere else. Meyer isn’t even considered a strong candidate to bet on for the LSU job.
Whoever set these LSU coaching odds for BookMaker.eu clearly has not seen Kingsbury's teams play defense. pic.twitter.com/wZuCo73yvc
