Urban Meyer has spoken on the Ohio State quarterback situation and all but fully revealed his hand.
Speaking at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon in Canton, Ohio, on Monday, Meyer told those joining him along with some media that Dwayne Haskins will get the first chance as the starter.
Here is his full statement:
“This is really the first time I’ve talked about this since the spring game, but as of now it looks like Dwayne Haskins will get the first opportunity to be the starter. Dwayne is a young guy that came in against our rivals and did a heck of a job. You go back and watch that again, he came in on the first drive and took us down the field and scored on that first drive against that defense. So he’s got a great release, he’s got good size and he’s a mobile-enough quarterback.”
Of course, Haskins, a redshirt sophomore, was the presumed front-runner after his main competition, Joe Burrow, announced earlier this month he will transfer. He will have Tate Martell also nipping at his heels heading into the season.
Meyer spoke on a number of other topics as well, including a little bit about Burrow, the Cleveland Browns, the College Football Playoff and the current strength of the Big Ten.
