COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State coach Urban Meyer will be rooting for Michigan State to knock off Penn State on Saturday. So, too, might his accountant.
Meyer, who will make roughly $6 million in 2016, has several performance incentives in his contract that could be triggered based on what happens at the end of this season. An appearance in the Big Ten Championship would net him $50,000. Winning it would bring in another $100,000.
Ohio State will need some help to reach the Big Ten title game, however. The Buckeyes must beat No. 3 Michigan on Saturday and hope that No. 7 Penn State loses to Michigan State. The Wolverines will advance to the conference championship in Indianapolis if they beat OSU, and Penn State will win the division if it beats MSU and Michigan loses to Ohio State.
Regardless of whether they make the conference championship, the Buckeyes might already have done enough to make the College Football Playoff if they beat Michigan. Ohio State owns road wins at No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 8 Oklahoma. The No. 2 Buckeyes lost to the seventh-ranked Nittany Lions, but CFP chairman Kirby Hocutt hinted Tuesday that Penn State has plenty of work to do to catch the Buckeyes.
“Does the selection committee see a small margin of separation this week between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 7 Penn State? We do not,” he said in a teleconference after the rankings were announced.
If Meyer makes a New Year’s Six bowl outside of the playoff (Orange, Rose, Sugar, Cotton), he’d earn $200,000. If Ohio State qualifies for the playoff he’ll take home $250,000. He’d add on another $100,000 by winning that semifinal and making it to the championship game.
|Accomplishment||Urban Meyer bonus|
|Big Ten Championship appearance||$50,000|
|Big Ten Championship win||$100,000|
|New Year’s Six Bowl||$200,000|
|CFP title game appearance||$350,000 ($100,000 added to above bonus)|
Meyer could also add $50,000 by winning Big Ten Coach of the Year. However, those might be the worst odds of all. No Ohio State coach has won the award since 1987.
