How early signing impacted Ohio State’s bowl prep
Ohio State has spent the last month juggling both recruiting and Cotton Bowl preparation, each a daunting task on its own, let alone combined.
How do the Buckeyes balance both? According to coach Urban Meyer, it comes down to his trust in his staff.
“We rely on guys that are very good at what they do. It’s called my staff,” Meyer said on Dec. 20. “The one thing that I can also tell you is that we’ve had — this is the best group of young coaches we’ve had, and when I say young coaches, our [graduate assistants], quality control people. It’s the best group we’ve had in my six years here at Ohio State. Without them, we can’t do that. When I say do this, I’m talking about everything. But when you come on off the road and you see the entire scouting report of the team you’re getting ready to play like done the way you want it done and that lets the coaches go to work. They’ve done a great job.”
On Wednesday in Dallas, defensive coordinator Greg Schiano shed some more light on the dilemma of balancing both duties. With the early signing period in December, coaches couldn’t take their foot off the recruiting gas pedal, but that couldn’t mean spending less time to prepare for No. 8 USC, either.
“It was harder than it’s ever been and I’ve been doing this for 30 years,” Schiano said. “This period leading up to this bowl game has been the hardest to juggle everything, but you can’t sacrifice this and you can’t sacrifice recruiting. You choose not to sleep, I guess.”
Buckeyes offer 2019 DT
Ohio State extended another Class of 2019 offer on Wednesday, to Wichita Falls (Texas) Hirschi 3-star defensive tackle Lloyd Murray Jr.
