Ohio State-Nebraska basketball preview
Ohio State (17-4) has won seven games in a row, most recently a 67-49 win over Minnesota on Saturday. The Buckeyes have been on a roll since beating then-No. 1 Michigan State on Jan. 7 and have since rolled to easy wins over Maryland, Rutgers, and Northwestern.
“They seem very, very connected. They seem like they like each other. They’ve got good chemistry. It’s easy to be in a good mood when you’re winning, too,” Minnesota coach Richard Pitino said of Ohio State.
Buckeyes redshirt junior Keita Bates-Diop led the way against the Golden Gophers with 17 points and 12 rebounds, marking his eighth double-double of the season and the 16th consecutive contest he’s scored in double-digits.
It was hardly Bates-Diop’s most efficient night, however, as he shot 7-for-21 from the field. He’ll hope for a more effective night against Nebraska (14-7), which is coming off a big 72-52 win over No. 23 Michigan, which has the third-best scoring defense in the Big Ten.
Freshman Kaleb Wesson has also been a key player for Ohio State this season. The 6-foot-9, 270-pound forward is averaging 11.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and he won Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Dec. 4.
The Huskers are led by junior guard James Palmer Jr., who is averaging 15.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Palmer Jr. scored 19 points on 5-for-8 shooting against Michigan. Juniors Isaac Copeland (12.3 points per game) and Glynn Watson Jr. (11.7 points per game) have also been top scoring options for Nebraska.
The Buckeyes and Huskers split their season series last year in a pair of heart-pounding contests. Ohio State beat Nebraska, 67-66, on Jan. 18, 2017 before the Huskers returned the favor Feb. 18, 2017 and picked up a 58-57 victory. Glynn Watson Jr.’s 3-point play with 11.3 seconds left punctuated a six-point swing for Nebraska that sealed the wild comeback win.
Monday’s game will be the lone contest between the conference rivals this season.
