Ohio State football: Breaking down Buckeyes playoff picture; DEs among All-Big Ten selections

Ohio State No. 8 in CFP rankings
As expected, Ohio State came in at No. 8 when the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night.
It’s looking increasingly likely that if the Buckeyes beat Wisconsin, the fourth and final spot could come down to Ohio State or Alabama, which finished 11-1 but didn’t win the SEC West. Could the Buckeyes have an edge in that scenario?
Kirk Herbstreit backs Buckeyes
The merits of the Crimson Tide vs. the hypothetical Big Ten champion Buckeyes will likely be debated until selections are made. ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said Tuesday night that a conference championship win could give the Buckeyes the nod over Alabama despite having two losses.
“If Ohio State beats Wisconsin, I don’t even know if it has to be emphatic,” he said. “If Ohio State beats Wisconsin, they will have a trump card, based on the committee’s own criteria, of the conference championship. Despite that Iowa loss, the conference championship is one of the things, one of the four, that they weight.”
DEs highlight All-Big Ten selections
Defensive ends Nick Bosa and Tyquan Lewis were both named first-team All-Big Ten selections by both the coaches and media on Tuesday. Cornerback Denzel Ward — a surprise omission from the coaches list given his All-America candidacy — was included on the media first team. Defensive end Sam Hubbard was a second-team choice on both lists.
The offensive lists will be released Wednesday morning.
