Ohio State gets big win as NFL draft deadline passes

The deadline to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft has come and gone, and Ohio State’s roster was not hurt nearly as much as it could have been. The Buckeyes lost three players with remaining eligibility — cornerback Denzel Ward, defensive end Sam Hubbard and linebacker Jerome Baker — but the rest of Ohio State’s players who considered turning pro will be back in Columbus next season.

That includes wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who announced his return for the 2018 season late Monday night on his Instagram page.

Ohio State is going to be loaded on both sides of the ball in 2018. Land of 10’s Austin Ward explained how big the returns of Dre’mont Jones, Mike Weber, Johnnie Dixon, Parris Campbell and others are for Urban Meyer’s program.

Just in terms of pure volume, the decisions to stay outweigh those to leave. That’s probably not really the best way to evaluate how well the Buckeyes made out at the deadline considering the caliber of the trio heading to the NFL. But it does play a factor in tipping the scales, especially because the positions impacted are so critical to Ohio State’s success moving forward and the role as leaders those returners will play.

Ohio State is a huge favorite against Oregon State

Ohio State opens its 2018 season against Oregon State at home. The Beavers are coming off a 1-11 season and have a new head coach, while the Buckeyes will likely open the season as a top-5 team. The game is not expected to be close, and some oddsmakers have already set a line. Ohio State is a 30- or 31-point favorite (depending on where you get the number) more than seven months before kickoff.

Ohio State featured twice on Sports Illustrated’s best games of 2018 list

Sports Illustrated put together an early look at the best game during each week of the 2018 college football season. The Buckeyes made the list twice. Ohio State’s Week 3 meeting against TCU and the team’s Week 5 divisional showdown at Penn State were both among the top games. The Buckeyes will have to face both of those tough opponents before the calendar flips to October.
