Ohio State football: Buckeyes have plenty of motivation for Cotton Bowl; Eli Apple suspended for final week of NFL season

Ohio State has plenty to play for in Cotton Bowl

Ohio State players were obviously disappointed when the team was not picked for the College Football Playoff in early December. But some of them are sick of people wondering if they still feel like they have something to play for in the Cotton Bowl on Friday.

“I think it’s disrespectful. I really do,” Ohio State senior center Billy Price said. “That’s why I got offended when someone asked me that just a second ago. ‘Can you get up for this game?’ Are you kidding me? It’s my final game as a fifth-year senior to cap off the 2013 recruiting class legacy, and if you think I’m not going to be excited, jacked up, juiced up, ready to go on that sideline, then don’t come to the game. It doesn’t matter what game it is. We could play on the sidewalk or we could go play in the grass and I’m going to be excited for it and ready for it.”

Land of 10’s Ryan Ginn has a full breakdown of why this game matters for the Buckeyes.

But Land of 10’s Austin Ward thinks it’s an even better chance to just appreciate the Ohio State quarterback. Here’s part of his reasoning:

I know the Barrett debates will never truly disappear. And hell, I’ve stoked more than a few of them over the last four years. But I think Barrett has more than earned a night off from the microscope he’s been living under, even if he obviously would never ask for it — particularly in a game he wants to win and is treating like any other.

Eli Apple’s disappointing 2017 season is over

Eli Apple had a forgettable 2017 season. The former Ohio State cornerback had trouble on and off the field, and he was called “a cancer” by New York Giants teammate Landon Collins on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Giants announced they were suspending Apple for the team’s 2017 season finale on Sunday against the Washington Redskins. The Giants said the suspension was for “conduct detrimental to the team.” Apple was the No. 10 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.
