Ohio State specialists revealed just how nasty the fallout for a couple of missed kicks can get.
The kickers, punters and long snapper took to their Twitter account (@) Sunday to post an email sent to Tyler Durbin after he missed two field goals in the 31-0 Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson on Saturday night.
The original tweet includes foul language and unsubstantiated accusations that don’t warrant repeating. Neither does the author’s name, considering it might be a pseudonym. But the Ohio State specialists felt compelled to let Buckeyes fans see it and respond to it. The Buckeyes’ specialists introduced it with two words: “Stay classy.”
Among some of the emailer’s comments to Durbin:
— “Please don’t come back to Columbus. Stay in Arizona. Hell, maybe Clemson will take you in. The fact that you transferred here to suck THAT bad actually hurts my soul. … If you can’t kick, why did you even take a spot on our roster? Why did you take the responsibility if you can’t kick at all? Trash.”
— “I hope you aren’t getting a scholarship. If I found out my hard earned money that I have to pay tuition with is going to pay for YOU to come here, I may get cancer.”
— “Your parents wonder why you transferred here just to dishonor our name, just like we all wonder. Think of your poor dad having to go to work this week and everyone will laugh at him. You’ve shamed your family forever.”
Durbin just finished his second season with Ohio State after transferring from James Madison, where he played soccer. He hit 17 of 22 field goals and was a third-team All-Big Ten selection, but he missed two kicks each against both Michigan and Clemson. He hadn’t missed until Penn State’s Marcus Allen blocked a field goal and Grant Haley returned it for a touchdown.
Durbin did receive some support after the email was circulated on Twitter, from both teammates and other fans.
From Ohio State punter Cameron Johnston:
I'm sorry but there is no place for this, for whoever sent this to tyler needs to be ashamed https://t.co/PpnvNHcBef

This was from Sean Nuernberger, who lost his kicking job to Durbin:
Unbelievable. Hard to believe an adult could say these things. https://t.co/9YNdKQItec

Support also came from a fellow OSU student:
One even came from a self-described Michigan fan:
