Ohio State basketball vs. Rutgers keys to the game
Make ’em count
Having suffered four of their seven Big Ten defeats by six points or fewer, it’s no coincidence the Buckeyes have struggled at the charity stripe throughout the 2016-17 campaign. On the season, Ohio State ranks 234th in the nation in free throw shooting, having made 67.9 percent of its attempts.
It’s no surprise that in their four-point win over the Wolverines, the Buckeyes bucked that trend, making 24 of their 28 attempts. Should Ohio State find itself in a closer-than-expected contest with the Scarlet Knights on Wednesday, the Buckeyes will need to take advantage of every opportunity they get.
Although Ohio State enters Wednesday’s game as a double-digit favorite, this is the sort of game where a poor performance from a single player can keep a pesky opponent like Rutgers hanging around.
With that in mind, it will be crucial for all of the Buckeyes’ key contributors to bring their best against the Scarlet Knights, including forward Marc Loving.
The lone senior on the Ohio State roster, Loving has been boom or best for the Buckeyes in 2017. While he’s scored at least 17 points in three of Ohio State’s last five games, his other two showings in that span have included outings of nine and five points — each of which came in Buckeyes losses.
If Ohio State is going to put the Scarlet Knights away early as expected, the Buckeyes are going to need players like Loving not to play down to their competition.
One of the best big men in the Big Ten, center Trevor Thompson has emerged as the closest thing Ohio State has to a best player this season.
Averaging 10.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, Thompson is a threat to record a double-double on any given night, just as he did with 13 points and 11 rebounds against the Wolverines. Given Rutgers’ size — including 7-foot Columbus native C.J. Gettys — it will be crucial for Ohio State to keep Thompson involved early and often on Wednesday.
