Ohio State basketball can’t be pleased with where it currently finds itself.
The Buckeyes (17-14 overall, 7-11 Big Ten) earned themselves a Wednesday start date in the Big Ten Tournament, a slot that must feel forever away from the Sunday title game that would require four wins to play in. Their first opponent, Rutgers, is the worst team in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights (14-17, 3-15) don’t have much to show from this season, but they’ll have a chance to inflict their own woes onto Ohio State.

Ohio State basketball key to the game
Ohio State knows the stakes. The Buckeyes need to win five in a row to avoid a second consecutive season without a ticket to the Big Dance. That’s easier said than done, obviously, but it starts with the first one. Rutgers is unquestionably the worst team in the Big Ten, but this game isn’t a given. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a big win against Illinois in their regular-season finale on Saturday. Furthermore, Ohio State only beat them by 6 points in Columbus in the regular season. The Buckeyes can’t win the Big Ten Tournament in one day, but they sure could lose it. To avoid that, they need to worry first about Rutgers and save thoughts of Northwestern and other potential opponents for later.

Keep it up
Rutgers didn’t have much to smile about this season, as evidenced by its aforementioned record. However, the Scarlet Knights did end the season on a positive note by taking down a surging Illinois team. At this point, that’s what Rutgers has to play for — spoiling the hopes of teams with better résumés. Ohio State won’t be getting into the NCAA Tournament without winning the conference tournament, but Rutgers could still make the Buckeyes sweat out an NIT bid. If the Scarlet Knights play a similar game to the one they did against the Fighting Illini, Ohio State could wind up exiting the tournament in disappointing fashion.
