Ohio State ready for NCAA Tournament battle vs. South Dakota State; Carlos Hyde reportedly will sign with Browns
Ohio State football is the No. 1 topic in Wake Up most days — but we cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.
Ohio State faces South Dakota State in NCAA Tournament
Prepare your excuses to get out of work early, Ohio State fans, it’s officially game day. The Buckeyes will play their first NCAA Tournament game in three years Thursday afternoon as they face 12th-seeded South Dakota State at 4 p.m. ET on TNT. The Buckeyes head into the game in Boise as the favorites, but 12 seeds are always dangerous in the Big Dance.
“You want it for your guys who have not tasted this incredible tournament experience,” Chris Holtmann told reporters Wednesday. “Our guys answered the bell (this season) and put us in a position to do this and hopefully we can make the most of it.”

Why the Buckeyes can be bracket booster
Ohio State is not a popular Sweet 16 pick. Only 24.3 percent of users in ESPN’s NCAA Tournament Challenge think Holtmann’s team will win its first two tournament games (a matchup with Gonzaga is likely if the Buckeyes beat South Dakota State). So with a lot of doubt surrounding Ohio State, Ward explains how a little belief in the team that nearly won the regular season Big Ten title could go a long way in some bracket pools.

Thad Matta turns down Georgia basketball job
Thad Matta won’t be heading to the Peach State. The former Ohio State basketball coach turned down the coaching job at Georgia, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported Wednesday. Matta did not coach this season after leaving Ohio State, and told Goodman that he “didn’t feel he was completely ready” to take the job with the Bulldogs.
Thad Matta on spurning Georgia: "It was the most difficult decision because Georgia is a tremendous opportunity for a coach to build a great program. Unfortunately, I just don’t feel that I am completely ready at this point to give Greg McGarity and Georgia what they deserve."

Carlos Hyde reportedly agrees to deal with Cleveland Browns
Good news if you’re a Buckeyes fan from Cleveland. The Browns are finally adding some scarlet and gray flavor to their roster. Former Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde has agreed to a 3-year deal with the Browns, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. Hyde spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers. He rushed for 938 yards and scored 8 touchdowns in 2017.
