Ohio State basketball might be down to its last chance to make a case for the NCAA Tournament.
The Buckeyes (15-11 overall, 5-8 Big Ten) head to East Lansing, Mich., to take on Michigan State (15-10, 7-5) on Tuesday night, with tip set for 9 p.m. ET. Ohio State is coming off a road loss to No. 21 Maryland that prevented the Buckeyes from grabbing a much-needed quality win. Head coach Thad Matta and his players are running out of opportunities to build up a résumé that would secure an at-large bid to the Big Dance.

Ohio State basketball keys to the game
1. Shake off the loss
Ohio State needs to forget about the loss to the Terrapins. The disappointment of defeat has often lingered around this team, but that can’t be the case now. The Buckeyes basically need to run the table in conference play to have a realistic shot at an at-large bid. That comes by taking one game at a time and refusing to dwell on the enormity of the task at hand.
2. Avoiding droughts
Ohio State most often finds itself in trouble when it goes long periods without scoring. That’s a flaw that simply can’t exist. The Buckeyes either spend too much time digging themselves out of holes or fail to put teams away. In both cases, it’s made their lives incredibly difficult.
Michigan State basketball keys to the game
1. Win the turnover battle
Even after a win against Iowa on Saturday, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo looked sick to his stomach about his team’s 21 turnovers. Iowa had just 8. The Spartans have lost the turnover battle in three straight games, and they had to do a lot right on Saturday to overcome the missed scoring opportunities and still win. Ohio State hasn’t been much better this season, coughing it up 13.2 times per game while forcing 12.1 turnovers per game. Whichever squad takes care of the rock will give itself a much better chance of coming out victorious.
2. Feed off the crowd
With injuries and family emergencies galore, this season hasn’t gone the way the shorthanded Buckeyes would have hoped. Still, they’ve been solid on the road as of late, beating Iowa and Michigan and hanging tough against a ranked Maryland team in their last three road games. Michigan State, meanwhile, has only lost to No. 16 Purdue at the Breslin Center in Big Ten play. This Spartans squad tends to be a team of runs, and if a raucous crowd gets behind its team, Michigan State will be be tough to beat.
