COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the second straight offseason, Ohio State has announced program captains ahead of spring practice. Per the Buckeyes’ official roster, quarterback J.T. Barrett, defensive end Tyquan Lewis and center Billy Price will each return as captains for Ohio State in 2017.
In doing so, Barrett becomes the first three-time captain in the Buckeyes’ 128-year history. He also becomes the program’s 10th two-time captain, as Price and Lewis become the 11th and 12th.
The reigning Big Ten Quarterback of the Year and co-winner of the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Football in 2016, Barrett is entering what will be his fourth season as Ohio State’s starting quarterback. He already owns most of the program’s career passing records and is on pace to become one of the most decorated signal-callers in Big Ten history.
After tallying 8 sacks and 10.5 tackles-for-loss in 2016 en route to being named the Big Ten’s Defensive Lineman of the Year, Lewis chose to forego the NFL draft in order to return to Ohio State for his senior season. Price opted to do the same, after earning All-American honors as a guard a season ago.
Barrett, Lewis and Price are fifth-year seniors who arrived in Columbus as a part of the Buckeyes’ 2013 class. It remains likely that Urban Meyer will choose more captains for his roster before the start of the 2017 campaign.
