Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann was well aware his Buckeyes were a popular upset pick in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. So after Ohio State’s 81-73 win over South Dakota State on Thursday, Holtmann took a friendly jab at those who doubted his team.
“I just want to thank all the fine, smart, clever journalists that didn’t pick us… and trust me, our guys were aware of that,” Holtmann said.
“Appreciate that,” he said, smirking and nodding at the camera.

Ohio State and South Dakota State were tied at 70 with 1:35 to go, before Kam Williams‘ 4-point play put the Buckeyes up for good. Williams was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer, which he converted. He made the free throw, and then was fouled from beyond the arc on Ohio State’s next possession. Williams knocked down three more free throws.
The Buckeyes came out victorious despite a marvelous performance from JackRabbits forward Mike Daum, who scored a game-high 27 points and hauled down six rebounds. Daum and South Dakota State nearly knocked off the Buckeyes, proving Ohio State’s naysayers right. But Williams and the Buckeyes had other ideas, and afterwards Holtmann took the opportunity to gloat.
