It’s National Signing Day 2018, and I’m here to tell you that Alabama won’t have the best recruiting class in college football when the day is over. The Tide have captured that crown for seven straight recruiting cycles, but Ohio State and Georgia are battling to unseat them.
Ohio State enters National Signing Day 2018 with the top class in the country, but Georgia’s right behind
Here’s how college football’s recruiting rankings shake out, per the 247Sports composite, which factors in rankings from all the major recruiting outlets:
Ohio State has the lead in both total recruiting ranking and average player rating over Georgia, but it’s not a big lead. The Buckeyes have a 2-point lead on the Dawgs, who have a 12-point lead on Texas, who enters Signing Day with a 17-point lead on Penn State.
Wait, what about Alabama? The Tide usually have the best recruits, right?
That’s true, they usually do. But Nick Saban’s streak will come to an end in the 2018 recruiting cycle. Alabama is No. 6 and isn’t signing as many recruits as some other top schools because of some scholarship math, which is backed up by the Tide’s per-recruit average grade that ranks third in the country. So Alabama’s going to be just fine, but won’t contend for the top recruiting class this time around.
Georgia has already pulled ahead of Ohio State, and it’s going to stay that way
We’ll keep track of their decisions throughout National Signing Day below. Georgia’s now on top.
Each team is waiting on commitments from just a few prospects. Ohio State is expecting to hear decisions from at least 5 recruits:
- 5-star T Nicholas Petit-Frere: He’s a Buckeye
- 4-star T Rasheed Walker: Committed to Penn State
- 4-star DE Javonte Jean-Baptiste: Yep, Ohio State got him
- 4-star LB Christopher Oats: Committed to Kentucky
- 3-star DE Tavion Thomas
UGA expects to hear some sort of news, good or bad, from at least these 5 prospects
- 5-star Tyson Campbell: He’s committed to Georgia.
- 4-star Quay Walker: Yep, he’s a Dawg
- 4-star Otis Reese: UGA flipped him from Michigan
- 4-star Rick Sandidge: Went to South Carolina
- 4-star Tommy Bush: He committed to Georgia
Ohio State announced its class was finished up, so Georgia’s going to take home the No. 1 class.
