My Senior Walk: Tate Martell talks big first win, preparing for Florida’s best and more
Ohio State 2017 quarterback commitment Tate Martell, a two-time national champion at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, has agreed to do a weekly journal of his senior season with the Gaels prior to his college enrollment in January.
1-0, but a long way to go.
Last weekend in Texas was a lot of fun. Our team had a great time traveling together and getting the chance to get on the road. That’s how we are going to grow as a team and it will only make us better.
I know that a lot of people thought maybe I was being a bit cocky when I mentioned in last week’s journal that I felt we’d win easy at Cedar Hill but I was just so confident in how we were preparing. We’ve won a lot of big games over the last two years and because of that I knew if we just executed our game plan they wouldn’t be able to hang with us for four quarters. I’m so proud of my team and how our guys competed, because it was a tough environment early. Cedar Hill played really hard and they were definitely trying to get us to lose our cool at times but we just did what we do and let the scoreboard do the talking.
This week we get to play at home against one of the best teams in Florida. Cocoa has put out some really good players over the years and I know they’ve got Bruce Judson over there who can make a lot of plays. I’m always confident that we are going to win, but they are a good team and I know that I’m not taking them lightly and neither is anyone on our team. We know anyone can get upset if you’re not preparing for every game the same way. With the game in Vegas this week, school has been really fun because the Gorman students are so excited. I think we’ve got the best student section in the country and the entire school does such a great job supporting us. It means a lot to us and that’s one of the reasons we work so hard to be the best team in the country. We know rankings don’t matter that much but it’s great to seen as the best and that’s how we want it to stay.
As people have probably seen, Tyjon (Lindsey) will miss a little time because of his shoulder injury. He got hurt in a scrimmage two weeks ago but I’m hoping he’s going to be ready by the time St. Thomas Aquinas comes in here because we’ll definitely need all of our guys against them and we’ll be in for a tough game this week and next week in California against St. John Bosco. They’re another top 5 team in the country and our offensive line commitment Wyatt Davis plays for them.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the Buckeyes are able to do this weekend. I know we have so many new guys getting ready to make their mark on the program and the coaching staff has got them ready to play. I know the offense will be a little bit different than it was with Zeke Elliott at running back, so I’m going to be watching J.T. Barrett closely to see how he runs things because I know eventually it could be me out there. I wish I could be at the ‘Shoe and a part of it all.
Thanks again for reading Buckeyes fans and I’ll talk to you again next week. Go Bucks! – TM
