Ohio State 2017 quarterback commitment Tate Martell, a two-time national champion at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, has agreed to do a weekly journal of his senior season with the Gaels prior to his college enrollment in January.
Last week we played against Durango. They were 7-1 at the time and a decent team from watching film on them, so it was good to get back to playing against teams that were a bit easier to get “up” for. We actually played really well offensively and defensively, and we won the game 56-0. The starters and myself only had to play three quarters. It was senior night so it was nice to get some of the players in on such a sentimental night for all of us. It’s hard to believe our time at Gorman is almost over already. I had 4 touchdowns and played pretty well. I’m excited to get to the playoffs because the starters will play full games again. It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve played four quarters.
This week we are playing against Sierra Vista for our league title. Like Durango, they’re pretty good and are actually undefeated like we are. They are currently 9-0 and have done a good job this year with their team. I won’t be running the ball as much this week so I stay fresh for the playoffs but obviously we are going to do what it takes to win the game. It’s going to be about establishing our offense early and letting the defense do what it does best. It’s a good test before we get into the playoffs.
After the game on Friday I’ll head to Ohio for my official visit with the Buckeyes. I’m really excited for the weekend. This is my first and last official visit. It’s a huge weekend for us – as in for the team – because right now every game is so critical for making the College Football Playoff. It’s also a big weekend for recruiting, obviously. We have a lot of big-time players coming in this weekend. I’m going to be around a lot of my future teammates that are already commits but mainly around the guys we are trying to get to commit to Ohio State. This weekend is a big opportunity to show what the future of the Buckeyes can look like and get the last few pieces that we need settled.
I’m leaving immediately after my game straight to go to the airport. My mom, dad, sister, aunt and my little cousin are all coming with me this weekend, so it’s going to be really cool to see everything with my whole family. I’m going to be in Ohio at like 5:30 in the morning and I’ll probably get some sleep before heading over to the Woody. Then I’ll go hang out with everyone in the middle of the day and for the rest of the evening. My flight leaves from Ohio in the morning on Monday, so I’m looking forward to Saturday and Sunday with the team and the coaches. It’s going to be huge for our class and our bonding.
One thing I’m excited for is seeing how Ohio State’s offense looks. I feel like my skill set is perfect for the offense and I see a lot of what they do in what we do at Gorman. I feel like J.T. Barrett and I have similar playing styles and I hope to pick his brain if I can. We are pass first, run second quarterbacks, but dangerous runners when we need to make a play. I feel like with him and me, we get out of the pocket when it’s our last resort. I am really excited for that because when I get to campus I can make an impact.
Palaie Gaoteote and I talked about his trip with Haskell (Garrett) last weekend. He told me that he loved his visit with Ohio State this past weekend and that he really loves everything about the school and especially with the football program. I know that he wants to visit USC before he makes any decisions, but I think we are in good position to get him. I know he wants to go through the recruiting process but that’s something that can wear you down even if you’re not expecting it to. I’m not going to let the Bishop Gorman to Ohio State pipeline go away easily.
Thanks for reading everyone, I’m looking forward to seeing up close what Buckeye Nation is all about this weekend – TM –
