Ohio State 2017 quarterback commitment Tate Martell, a two-time national champion at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, has agreed to do a weekly journal of his senior season with the Gaels prior to his college enrollment in January.
Last week, we played against Kahuku from Hawaii and we didn’t play our best out there, but we did what we had to do to get the job done. I know for a fact that we really could have laid it on that team but we came out a little flat. That’s the kind of thing I was talking about last week when I said we really need to not let up. Talent is one thing but having the right mental approach is another and we didn’t play our game. I don’t want to complain, we still won 35-7, and I played all right. I had 5 touchdowns in the game but overall I feel like I can do a better job of getting the offense into winning situations. Right now my team is sitting at No. 1 in the nation in every single poll you can find. We are 4-0. I’m having a pretty good year so far with almost 1,200 yards, 17 touchdowns and no interceptions. But I want to be better and I know we can be better.
This coming week we have a lower-ranked opponent, Bonanza, from our state. We try not to overlook these games because we don’t want to have any slip-ups, especially against teams we know we should beat by a good margin. We’ve all seen the big upsets that have happened throughout sports and we don’t want to be that kind of story. Still, this week is about getting ourselves playing good football for 48 minutes and making sure that we patch up what needs to be done better. We need to do that this week because next week we have St. Thomas Aquinas, who everyone has predicted to be our toughest game this year. They started the year ranked No. 1 and it’s going to be on ESPN and they may be one of the few teams in the country that has as much talent as we do. We will be playing against one of our future teammates in Trevon Grimes, so I’m looking forward to seeing him again as well.
Last weekend I couldn’t watch the Ohio State game live because that was at the same time we were playing, but I did go back and watch it later. That was a very impressive win for the Buckeyes and they’re just showing how dominant they will be even when people call it a “rebuilding year.” There is so much talent and I don’t think there is anyone questioning that team, and what they are capable of, after a blowout win over a pretty good opponent. The offense was clicking. The defense was playing lights out. I was really pleased as a recruit and a commit to see how they just handed it to them. I can’t wait to be a part of it.
As I said, I know I’m playing OK and I feel good about where I am, but there is so much more that I just know I can improve on. It makes me excited because I know going to Ohio State, that coaching staff is going to be able to pull it all out of me.
Thanks for reading everyone. See you next week. – TM
