With the clock winding down and the USA Sevens Rugby Team badly needing to score, Nate Ebner — the former Ohio State defensive back and current New England Patriot — delivered in a big way.

Ebner’s 50-yard sprint for a try — rugby’s version of a touchdown — pulled the United States within five points with just over a minute to play, but the Americans couldn’t get the last score they needed to advance.
With a 24-19 loss to Fiji, Team USA was eliminated from medal contention.

Even in defeat, Ebner provided plenty of memories during the last two days of competition in Rio. He became the first active NFL player to compete in the Olympics, absolutely destroyed a Brazilian player with a nasty hit and played with the passion his fans — old and new — have come to expect from him.
On Tuesday, the New England Patriots training camp was even more patriotic than normal, with Bill Belichick and others sporting Ebner’s USA Rugby gear.
If you just can’t get enough of Ebner and Team USA, they still have two more matches left in the consolation round, which starts at 3 p.m.
