Bovada named only one Big Ten player on its 2016 Heisman Trophy odds list. That player was Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett.
Barrett was given 12/1 odds to win the Heisman this season. The junior, dual-threat quarterback had the fourth-best odds behind LSU running back Leonard Fournette (9/2 odds), Clemson quarterback DeShaun Watson (5/1) and Stanford tailback Christian McCaffrey (11/2). Barrett’s odds actually worsened, as he was listed at 10/1 to win the Heisman in January.
Clearly, the oddsmakers think much more highly of Barrett than analytical website Pro Football Focus, which shockingly excluded the quarterback from its list of the top 101 players in college football.
Ohio State might need a Heisman Trophy caliber season out of Barrett to compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes lost 16 starters and a ton of star power from last season’s 12-1 team. It’s officially Barrett’s team, which means the pressure to live up to lofty expectations is here.
