North Carolina corralled in-state 4-star outside linebacker Payton Wilson with a verbal commitment Monday. Wilson selected the Tar Heels over Ohio State, Clemson and Virginia Tech.
The Orange High School (Hillsborough, N.C.) product is ranked as the No. 2 OLB in the nation in 2018, according to 247Sports. He racked up 127 tackles as well as 13 sacks in his junior season.
Prior to Wilson’s commitment, he took an unofficial visit to Ohio State April 1, but he had developed a tight relationship with North Carolina defensive coordinator John Papuchis.
Wilson had offers from more than two dozen schools, including Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Alabama, Florida State and Georgia.
According to 247Sports, Wilson will play his final season at Orange, graduate in December and enroll at UNC in January.
