Northwestern starting CB Keith Watkins out for season with knee injury
Northwestern starting CB Keith Watkins will miss the 2016 season after injuring his knee, the team announced on Twitter on Tuesday.
The redshirt junior said in a video with the Wildcats’ athletic department that last week, he twisted up his left knee with an offensive player and finished practice, but it was swollen the next day. He saw the team trainers, who told him he needed surgery.
Watkins would have started at corner opposite Matthew Harris.
“Really disappointed. He’s worked so hard,” coach Pat Fitzgerald said. “But we’ve got great depth at that position. Excited for those guys that get the opportunity from someone else’s tough situation. And that’s football, next man up.”
Fitzgerald named Montre Hardage, Trae Williams and Alonzo Mayo as guys who could play a bigger role with Watkins lost for the year.
