Could the success of one of Chicago’s baseball teams this October portend success for Chicago’s Big Ten team come March?
Northwestern basketball coach Chris Collins said Friday, “Since the Cubs are gonna win the World Series, we’re on the right track” toward making the NCAA tournament.

The Cubs have not reached the World Series since 1945 or won it since 1908 but lead the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in the best-of-seven NLCS. If they win Saturday, they will head to the Fall Classic to face the Cleveland Indians.
Northwestern has never qualified for the NCAA tournament, which has occurred annually since 1939.
Collins’ team is not expected to snap that streak this year. The Wildcats, who lost Tre Demps and Alex Olah to graduation, were not among the 57 teams to receive votes in the preseason coaches poll and have been picked widely to finish near the bottom of the Big Ten in 2016-17.
