LINCOLN, Neb. — Senior WR Jordan Westerkamp wants to play this weekend.
He’s been pestering senior WR Brandon Reilly about it all week.
“I have class with him and he’s like, ‘Yeah, they might let me try and play,’ and I’m like, ‘Dude, shut up, you can’t even stand up,'” Reilly said after practice on Wednesday. “It’s just the guy he is, he always wants to be out there with us.”
Westerkamp has been ruled out with a lower back injury. The senior receiver leads Nebraska this year with 13 catches for 228 yards and 4 touchdowns. Both coach Mike Riley and offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf have mentioned putting Reilly in Westerkamp’s slot position.
“I like that matchup with Brandon in the slot,” Langsdorf said Wednesday. “He’s got good speed. He’s got the chance to play against a linebacker a little bit more, which is a good thing, because he can run.”
Reilly has 4 catches on the year for 97 yards but was second on the team last year with 40 catches for 754 yards.
Westerkamp won’t be traveling with the team, Reilly said, but he’ll still have a presence on the team.
“He’s gonna be texting us the whole time we’re in the hotel, being annoying,” Reilly joked. “It’ll still be good to have.”
