Nebraska vs. Oregon preview
Nebraska escaped with a 43-36 win over Arkansas State in Week 1, while Oregon defeated Southern Utah, 77-21. This week’s matchup marks Nebraska’s first trip to Autzen Stadium. It is the Huskers’ first visit to the state of Oregon since Sept. 27, 1952, when Nebraska defeated Oregon 28-13 in Portland.
The matchup Saturday completes a home-and-home series between Nebraska and Oregon. The Huskers won the 2016 matchup, 35-32.
Nebraska’s offense had many impressive moments against Arkansas State, boasting more than 200 yards both on the ground and in the air. The Blackshirts were a little less balanced, but defensive coordinator Bob Diaco isn’t worried about his group. He felt the defense competed hard and accomplished what he asked of them.
Diaco is familiar with Oregon coach Willie Taggart after having faced him while Diaco was at UConn and Taggart at South Florida. For that reason, he has an idea of what to expect on Saturday.
“I would think that Coach [Taggart] has a pretty good idea of the things I like to do and I’ve got a pretty good idea of the things he likes to do,” Diaco said. “They’re just getting started. We’re just getting started, so there’s part of that and a growth-development process. This isn’t instant by any means.”
As for Oregon, the Ducks boasted 348 rushing yards and 355 passing yards against Southern Utah.
Aside from what the Huskers will see on the field, the coaches are preparing the team for a noisy Autzen Stadium. Coach Mike Riley is more than familiar with the Ducks’ home field, having coached at Oregon State for many years.
“It’s one of the great, tough environments that I’ve coached in,” Riley said. “The stadium, for whatever reason the way it’s built, is one of the five top noisiest places I’ve ever coached.”
