Nebraska-Northwestern series history
Nebraska and Northwestern have met a total of 10 times so far in series history. Of those 10 matchups, the Huskers have won 7 of them. Since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011, the two have faced off 6 times. The Huskers have won 4 of those matchups.
Northwestern’s 2 wins over Nebraska since the Huskers joined the Big Ten came in 2011 and 2015. The matchup in 2011 also kicked off quite a few close games between the two programs. In fact, 3 points or less decided the final score between the Huskers and Wildcats in 4 out of those 6 matchups as Big Ten foes.
- 2011: Northwestern won 28-25
- 2012: Nebraska win 29-28
- 2013: Nebraska won 27-24
- 2014: Nebraska won 38-17
- 2015: Northwestern won 30-28
- 2016: Nebraska won 24-13
In the 2012 and 2013 matchups, Nebraska rallied from fourth-quarter deficits. That includes the now famous Hail Mary pass from Ron Kellogg Jr. to Jordan Westerkamp at Memorial Stadium in 2013.
Kellogg’s pass to Westerkamp was a 49-yard touchdown catch that saved the Huskers from a loss in front of 91,140 fans.
Prior to becoming Big Ten conference foes, Nebraska and Northwestern met 4 times. Nebraska only lost one of those matchups from 1902 through 2000, which came in 1931. The Huskers lost 19-7 to the Wildcats in Evanston, Ill.
In 2000, Nebraska faced Northwestern in the Alamo Bowl. The Huskers won that meeting 66-17, which also marked the highest point total by Nebraska in a bowl game. The standout Husker from that game was Dan Alexander. He rushed for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The only shutout in series history came on Nov. 27, 1902. Nebraska won that meeting over the Northwestern Wildcats 12-0 in Lincoln.
