Nebraska-Northwestern basketball preview
Nebraska (10-5, 1-1 Big Ten) and Northwestern (10-5, 1-1 Big Ten) return to Big Ten action on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.
The Huskers come into the matchup after a 71-62 win over Stetson Friday night to end nonconference play. A win would be Nebraska’s fourth straight, which would mark a season-best win streak.
Nebraska’s 10-5 start to the season is the program’s best 15-game mark since the 2010-11 season. The Huskers also have four players averaging double figures. James Palmer Jr. leads the way with 15.1 points per game.
As for Northwestern, the Wildcats come into the matchup after a 95-73 win over Brown on Saturday. Dererk Pardon led Northwestern with 18 points, and the Wildcats shot 57 percent in the second half. Scottie Lindsey leads Northwestern scorers with 14.7 points per game.
The Northwestern matchup begins a stretch of road games for Nebraska, with three out of the next four away from home. That includes a pair of games against 2017 NCAA Tournament teams.
Interestingly enough, out of Nebraska’s four top scorers, only Glynn Watson Jr. played in Big Ten action during the 2016-17 season. Anton Gill was out with a knee injury, and Palmer (Miami) and Isaac Copeland (Georgetown) sat out after transferring.
Both Copeland and Palmer played solid games against Stetson on Friday, which included 13 points apiece. Four Huskers were in double figures that night, and junior forward Tanner Borchardt also contributed with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks in the second half. Borchardt was put on a scholarship a little over a week ago.
Nebraska averages 75.8 points per game, which is the highest scoring mark through 15 games for a Huskers team since the 1995-96 season. That team averaged 87.5 points per game during that time. Nebraska is 10-1 when scoring at least 70 points, and the Huskers have had six games this season of at least 80 points.
As for Northwestern, the Wildcats have won five out of their last six games. Their only loss in that stretch came at No. 17 Oklahoma on Dec. 22.
This is the 14th meeting between Nebraska and Northwestern, with the first matchup in the series in 1933. The Huskers hold a 7-6 lead in the series. Nebraska is 4-5 against the Wildcats since joining the Big Ten.
Nebraska’s last win over Northwestern came in Evanston, Ill., on Feb. 8, 2014. The Huskers won that one 53-49.
