Nebraska-Wisconsin basketball preview
Nebraska returns to Big Ten play on Tuesday after being off since Monday, Jan. 29. Prior to the break, the Huskers completed a stretch of 4 games in 8 days that ended with a 74-63 win over Wisconsin. The victory was Nebraska’s first win in Madison since 1990.
The Huskers are seeking a fourth Big Ten road win this season, which would also be Nebraska’s third straight conference road win. If the Huskers defeat Minnesota, it would be the first time it has happened since 2016 (at Rutgers, at Illinois, at Michigan State).
A win would also keep Nebraska in the running for a top-4 spot in the Big Ten Tournament heading into the final 3 weeks of the regular season. The Huskers are currently tied with Michigan for fourth place with 6 games to go. With an 8-4 mark, this is also Nebraska’s best conference record after 12 games since 1999.
James Palmer Jr. is currently averaging 25.2 points over Nebraska’s last 6 games. He is also shooting 51 percent from the field, 80 percent from the line and adding 4.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game during that time. Palmer is the first Nebraska player to average at least 20 points per game in conference play since the 1997-98 season. The last player to average at least 20 points was Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue.
As for Minnesota, the Golden Gophers come into the game looking to snap a five-game losing streak. Since facing Nebraska in December, a shoulder injury has kept Amir Coffey (14.0 points, 4.1 rebounds per game) from playing more than twice in the last nine games. Also, Reggie Lynch (10.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 4.1 bpg) was suspended on Jan. 5 and has missed the last 9 games as a result. Minnesota was ranked as high as No. 12 in the country in December.
Minnesota junior forward Jordan Murphy is among Big Ten leaders in both scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.7 rpg). Guard Nate Mason is averaging 15.7 points and 4.3 assists per game and has hit a team-high 58 3-pointers.
A win on Tuesday would mark Nebraska’s first win in Williams Arena in 15 years.
