Nebraska-Illinois basketball preview
Since meeting Illinois in mid-January, the Huskers have been on a roll — 8-1 during the last nine games. And it all began against the Illini when James Palmer Jr. hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to give Nebraska a 64-63 home win. Since then, Palmer has jumped to second in the Big Ten in scoring at 20 points per game in conference games.
A victory would give Nebraska, which has won six in a row, its longest conference winning streak in 40 years.
Nebraska is coming off a 70-66 win against Maryland. Palmer had 26 points and 5 assists. Isaiah Roby had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Isaac Copeland had 9 points and 9 rebounds. Glynn Watson Jr. added 8 points.
Illinois is looking to snap a four-game losing streak. The Illini fell 78-68 at Indiana on Wednesday. Leron Black had 20 points and 7 rebounds. Black leads Illinois in scoring (14.6) and rebounding (5.5). Kipper Nichols came off the bench for 16 points against Indiana.
The 2017-18 season has been up and down for Illinois, with the Illini opening with six consecutive wins before three consecutive losses. Illinois has had conference losing streaks of six and four games sandwiched between wins over Indiana and Rutgers. Those two wins came at State Farm Center.
As for Nebraska, the win over Maryland kept the Huskers in fourth place in the Big Ten standings. A win on Sunday would mean the Huskers would match a school record for conference wins in a season with 12. The other Nebraska teams to win 12 games in conference play are the 1965-66 (Big Eight) and 1915-16 (Missouri Valley) squads.
