Nebraska added to its coaching staff Sunday with the hiring of longtime coach Gary Darnell as a defensive consultant.
Darnell, 68, has decades of coaching experience, having worked on staffs in the SEC, Big 12 and ACC and at Notre Dame. He served as head coach at Tennessee Tech from 1983-85 and at Western Michigan from 1997 to 2004. He also did stints as interim head coach at Florida (1989) and Texas A&M (2007).
Nebraska defensive coordinator Bob Diaco served as linebackers coach under Darnell in 2004.
The Cornhuskers had an opening on their staff after the death of Bob Elliott earlier this month. Elliott had served as safeties coach before stepping down to take on a reduced role as a consultant in June, with Scott Booker taking his place.
