Maurice Washington‘s wild month on the recruiting trail has come to a close. Washington signed with Nebraska on Wednesday, making his announcement on ESPN2.
Washington had been trending toward the Huskers since last week, leading up to his official visit. His trip to Nebraska only made him more confident in his decision to join the Huskers.
Washington’s recruitment heated up after his breakout performance on Jan. 4 at the Under Armour All-America Game. He began hearing from several schools that renewed their interest in him, but concerns arose about whether he would be able to qualify academically. Nebraska is confident he will be fine, or else it would not have accepted his letter of intent.
Arizona State made things interesting. A strong official visit there the weekend of Jan. 19 brought a lot of momentum for the Sun Devils. Still, the Huskers surpassed it with their own courtship. Helping Nebraska’s case was Ohio State ultimately bowing out for a variety of factors, most notably that Washington’s lead recruiter, Kerry Coombs, accepted a job with the Tennessee Titans.
Player breakdown: Maurice Washington
Weight: 190 pounds
Hometown: Cedar Hill, Texas (Trinity Christian)
Ranking: No. 10 running back, No. 207 prospect overall (247Sports composite)
Where he fits: Washington expressed a desire to move to defense, but don’t expect that to happen at Nebraska. The Huskers want to keep the ball in his hands and allow him to become a playmaker. While he will operate primarily out of the backfield, don’t be shocked if he lines up at receiver, too.
