Nebraska football almost staged an improbable comeback against Willie Taggart and the Oregon Ducks.
Playing in Eugene, Oregon, the Huskers gave up 42 points in the first half. In the second half, Nebraska rallied and scored 21 unanswered points. However, that wasn’t enough as Tanner Lee’s fourth interception with about two minutes to play sealed the 42-35 win for Oregon.
Here’s what head coach Mike Riley said after the game:
Summary of the game
“Really disappointing start of the game. They made some plays, we maybe had some opportunities to make some plays and did not. Just really really let it get out of hand by the end of the first half … The second half, we started to make some plays defensively, we started to get some stops. Football is momentum and as disappointing as that was, we’ll have a hard time watching some of that film, I told everybody from the beginning I really like this team, I’ve really enjoyed them. Football was really inconsistent today but the team was good.”
“We had a shot. As bad as it was, we had a shot.”
On QB Tanner Lee
“I think that he made some really good throw, I think that he missed some throws that were real close. Right in the fourth quarter, there had to be two or three makable throw [he] just missed and anyone of the few inches difference catching the ball changes that look.”
“We all see his talent. We all see his poise. I think we need to do a good job of protecting him.”
“I thought it was real good for Tanner. He should play well for us down the road.”
On the atmosphere in Eugene, Oregon
“Every minute in this environment today was awesome. I thought out coaches did a nice job of preparing. The noise was great, as always here in Autzin, but I think we handled it real well.”
On his defensive play
Either it was the smokescreens on the outside, the real quick hitters, we played that a little bit tighter and tougher and then we were in way better position on the post routes they were killing us on early on in the game. Sometimes it was a little better position like that, all of a sudden it doesn’t make that throw so easy.
Injury update on Tre Bryant, David Knevel and Josh Kalu
“I don’t know for sure. I did get a little bit better news than what I thought about [Tre Bryant]. It’s a knee for sure. I shouldn’t say anything until I know more. I hope he’s alright.”
“[For] Knevel, we hoped that he could play but obviously he couldn’t, and we don’t know how soon he’ll be back.”
“Kalu, hamstring, hope it’s not a big one.”
