Editor’s note: Nebraska football commit Brendan “Bookie” Radley-Hiles, the Huskers’ top-ranked 2018 recruit who plays at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., is contributing a weekly first-person story to Land of 10. Here is the ninth installment, as told to beat writer Erin Sorensen.
I just got back to IMG after spending some time at home. We just had a bye week, so I took the opportunity to head west and see my family. I flew to Las Vegas, but then drove to Los Angeles with my mom and grandma.
While I was home, I got to go to my old high school game, see some of my old classmates and hang out with them. My sister also had her gender reveal and I found out that I’m having a little niece. I’m very excited for that. You could say that was the highlight of my trip.
Speaking of my sister, she lives on the water so I got to wake up feeling like a king almost. I stayed with her and it was great.
I’m also a part of this thing with one of Darnay Holmes‘ cousins, Akeem GonzaleX. He has a foundation about athletics and tattoos, called Athletic Tatts. His project highlights all of these athletes and tells their stories behind their tattoos.
So many people are often afraid to ask about my tattoos, but some are very deep and personal that no one really knows or understands. I ended up doing a photo shoot while home with him because we wanted to take advantage of being on the beach. I shared one photo on Instagram already, but I may hold on to the others for now.
Now that I’m back in Florida, I’m looking forward to getting back to the grind tomorrow with my guys. However, I did appreciate the time I had off over the last week.
For an athlete, a bye week is a time to recover and to recuperate. It’s like a cheat week because you get to double-up on film study for your next opponent. You can also rest your body up to give it your all again like it’s the first game of the season.
Being able to have a bye week in the middle of a tough season and a tough schedule like this is great. It also messes up your schedule just a little bit. I was able to get a little training in while I was home, though. I worked out with my old trainers, but it still knocks you off a little bit because you’re not with your guys for a week. But when it comes to IMG, though, we get right back to it.
And I am getting right back into it. Aside from my IMG schedule, I’m still planning out all of my final official visits. As of now, I’m planning to visit Texas and Oklahoma. The plan is to visit Texas this weekend for their matchup with Oklahoma State, and then Oklahoma next weekend for their matchup with Texas Tech.
Funny enough, I actually scheduled my Oklahoma visit before talking to my roommate T.J. Pledger, who is committed to the Sooners. It worked out, though, because he was already planning to visit that weekend so I’ll get to go with him.
I’ve always planned on taking all five of my official visits, so this is just the next step in that. I don’t want people to have a negative image of me doing that, but you also have to do what is right with you. You have to take the good with the bad, and it can only affect you and overwhelm you if you allow it to.
As for me, I’m just enjoying it all as it comes.
