When Nebraska coach Mike Riley took the podium for his Thursday news conference, he revealed how he found out about the big news of the day: the firing of athletic director Shawn Eichorst.
“I think that my first reaction — and I was told personally by president (Hank) Bounds and chancellor (Ronnie) Green — is I was taken aback and surprised,” Riley told reporters. “I was flat-out saddened by the whole deal. I really enjoyed working with Shawn. Besides being a good man, I think he had everyone’s best interest at heart.”
He said the support he got from Eichorst was the best he’s ever received from an athletic director.
“The support was at the highest level.”
“With that, it truly is … I’m just thankful he brought me here,” Riley added.
Riley knows there will be a lot of rumors about whether Eichorst’s firing will lead to his own firing. He also knows there’s nothing he can do about those rumors:
“Whatever is swirling out there, its swirling one way or another and you have to remain steady.”
