Coming off a 56-14 loss to Ohio State last week, the Nebraska Cornhuskers have a bye prior to its Oct. 28 game at Purdue. The 42-point loss to the Buckeyes was the team’s worst this season, pushing the Cornhuskers’ record to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten.
On Wednesday, Nebraska coach Mike Riley talked to the media after his team’s practice.
Mike Riley on motivating his players:
“We have to give them something that they can say, ‘that’s right,’ give them something to be motivated by. Motivation comes in all different packages for people. I’ve got 128 guys and there might be 128 different buttons. Or whatever it is that turns you on, let’s push it. Let’s go. By you being the best player you can be. You being a senior and you want to have a great finish to your senior year. Whatever your motivation is, let’s punch it and let’s go.”
On members of the coaching staff switching roles:
“That part of it, I wouldn’t talk about publicly (…) what we have talked about is basically finding a way to help our team do the things I just mentioned, and that’s score more points, offensively. How we have to do that is obviously more consistent production within the game — within the series — and sometimes it’s been a mystery to me where we’ll have a nice drive for a touchdown and then go two or three three-and-outs right in a row. We just have to be more consistent to score points.”
On using the bye week for recruiting purposes:
“We’re gonna have some coaches leaving as soon as tonight. Some will stay. We’re going to have a practice that will be run by probably half of our full-time coaches tomorrow and it will be good. We thought we’d benefit from having one more day in high schools. I got kind of lobbied on that and it was a good idea I think … [Cornerbacks coach] Dante [Williams] said it would help him with what he’s trying to do, to have one more day in the schools. Because if they couldn’t go out tomorrow, they could only really get to some school Friday, some game Friday night. Maybe nobody is even playing Saturday. So, you’re really limited to only one day. I think [Dante] has a good point … I’m going to do local and out-of-town. I plan to balance both of those things. I just don’t know where I’m going out-of-town yet.”
