There’s a lot of speculation that Nebraska will be starting a search for a new football coach in the coming weeks or months. If the Huskers and new athletic director Bill Moos do indeed part ways with Mike Riley, one USA Today columnist has an idea about who Nebraska’s “dream hire” would be.
Dan Wolken of USA Today wrote a column with coaching search advice for Nebraska, Tennessee and others on Thursday. In Wolken’s eyes, getting Justin Fuente from Virginia Tech would be the best-case scenario for the Huskers.
“Though it will be difficult to pry him away from a very comfortable situation at Virginia Tech, where he’s 15-5 midway through his second season, Nebraska would be dumb not to at least inquire if he’s interested in getting back closer to home,” Wolken wrote of Fuente, a Tulsa, Okla. native.
Fuente, 41, took over the Hokies in 2016 after four years as the head coach at Memphis. Virginia Tech went 10-4 last season and is off to a 5-1 start in 2017.
In addition to Fuente, Wolken named UCF’s Scott Frost as Nebraska’s “sensible hire” and Mike Leach as the program’s “entertainment value hire.”
