Piper, a Norfolk Neb. native, included a note while announcing his commitment that many Huskers fans should be able to relate to.
“It’s every Nebraska kid’s dream to wear the crimson and white. We never had season tickets but would find a way to take the whole family to at least one game per season where I’d sit next to people I had never met (who sometimes let me finish off their popcorn) and we’d leave as friends,” Piper wrote on Twitter. “Football is not just a game or a sport here in this state, but the lifeblood of being a Nebraskan. To wear this jersey means so much — an honor and responsibility I will do everything I can to uphold. Officially committing to Nebraska!”
Piper is listed at 6-foot-4, 275 pounds and is considered the No. 62 defensive tackle in the 2019 recruiting class in the 247Sports composite ratings. Piper picked up an offer from the Huskers on Feb. 28.
He’s the third verbal commit in Nebraska’s 2019 class, joining linebacker Garrett Nelson and athlete Garrett Snodgrass. Nelson and Snodgrass are also from Nebraska.
