Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck already has his defensive coordinator in former Arkansas coach Robb Smith, but it now appears that former Minnesota defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel will not be rowing the boat in any capacity.
Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune reported Tuesday that Sawvel will not return to the Gophers next season. Christensen also reports that Sawvel has three opportunities, with one in the Big Ten and two in the ACC.

Sawvel was one of many assistant coaches who worked under Jerry Kill for years, having joined Kill’s first staff as a defensive backs coach at Southern Illinois in 2001. He made the move with Kill to Northern Illinois in 2007, then again to Minnesota in 2010.
Sawvel worked as a defensive backs coach his entire time under Kill, only receiving a promotion to defensive coordinator once Tracy Claeys was promoted to head coach following Kill’s retirement in 2015 due to health concerns.
Given that Kill is not feeling too friendly to Minnesota these days due to the firing of Tracy Claeys, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Fleck retains little staff from the previous regime.
