Minnesota recruiting: All of the Gophers’ 2018 de-commitments
P.J. Fleck will finalize his first full class at Minnesota this week, but there are still some recruits who opted to explore other options after initially pledging to the Gophers. Here’s a look at Minnesota’s de-commitments in the 2018 recruiting class and where those players are heading instead.
Minnesota recruiting: 2018 de-commitments
4-star OT Jalen Mayfield (Grand Rapids, Mich) – Signed with Michigan
Mayfield de-committed from Minnesota just two days after picking up an offer from Michigan, his home state school. The allure of playing for an in-state power was too much for the Gophers to compete with for the talented offensive tackle. Mayfield initially committed to Minnesota in February 2017 right after an unofficial visit.
3-star OT Oyenmwen Uzebu (Alpharetta, Ga.) – Signed with West Virginia
Uzebu was committed to Minnesota for only a month (from April 14 to May 15 in 2017). He picked West Virginia over the summer and kept with pledge with the Mountaineers, signing with them during the early signing period.
3-star RB Nolan Edmonds (Alpharetta, Ga.) – Signed with Minnesota
This one ended up working out for Minnesota. Edmonds, a high school teammate of Uzebu, de-committed from Minnesota in June, but then re-committed to Fleck’s program in July. He kept his pledge and signed with Minnesota in December.
3-star QB Brennan Armstrong (Shelby, Ohio) – Signed with Virginia
Armstrong was verbally committed to Minnesota from February to November last year, but he ended up deciding to head to the ACC. Armstrong, who had five Power 5 offers, committed to Virginia in November and signed with the Cavaliers the following month.
3-star DT Noah Shannon (Oswego, Ill.) – Signed with Iowa
The Gophers missed out on Shannon to one of their divisional rivals. Shannon was committed to Minnesota for less than three weeks in May. He committed to Iowa over the summer and held his pledge.
3-star CB Tyrik Henderson (Carol Stream, Ill.) – Uncommitted
Henderson de-committed from Minnesota on Dec. 1, less than three weeks before the early signing period. He’s choosing between Indiana, Toledo, Minnesota and more for his final decision.
3-star CB Shamaur McDowell (Bradenton, Fla.) – Uncommitted
McDowell de-committed from Minnesota in October and has not made another pledge. He has 18 offers, according to 247Sports.
