Minnesota-Northwestern basketball preview

Minnesota’s season to this point had a rough patch in the middle of it, but otherwise, the team has gone 12-1 overall. During that middle stretch, the Golden Gophers went 1-3, with losses to Miami (FL), Nebraska and Arkansas.

In the Golden Gophers’ most recent game, the team lost at home to a Big Ten foe in Indiana. Minnesota is led in both scoring and rebounding this season by Jordan Murphy. Murphy, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, is averaging 19.0 points and 12.9 rebounds per game.

Aside from Murphy, Minnesota gets the bulk of its scoring from Nate Mason (15.6 ppg), Amir Coffey (14.1 ppg) and Reggie Lynch (10.1 ppg). All four of its top scorers are returnees from last season’s team.

Minnesota has five different players shooting at least 36 percent or better from the 3-point line this season. The Golden Gophers played the Wildcats last season one time, on the road, and won, 70-66.

Coming into this season, Northwestern had some hype around them, as the team was coming off its first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. The Wildcats were returning many of its key players from that team, so, expectations were high.

The team to this point, it could be said, hasn’t lived up to those expectations. Northwestern is 10-7 overall and just 1-3 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats have lost three of its last four games overall, including a 104-78 loss to Oklahoma.

The lone Big Ten team Northwestern has beaten to this point is Illinois and that was at home in a 72-68 overtime effort on Dec. 1. The Wildcats are led in scoring by Scottie Lindsey at 14.3 points per game, but three other players average at least 12 points per game as well — Bryant McIntosh, Vic Law and Dererk Pardon.

Northwestern’s leading rebounder is Pardon, at 6.7 rebounds per game, while McIntosh is the leading assist man at 5.4 assists per game.

One day after the team defeated Brown, McIntosh got an MRI on his left knee due to an injury taking place against Brown and the MRI revealed no major ligament damage.
