Minnesota basketball is 2-0 after beating USC Upstate, 92-77, and Providence, 86-74. The Gophers are ranked No. 14 in the AP Poll Top 25, moving up one spot from the previous rankings.
Minnesota has its highest ranking since No. 10 in 1993-94.
Thanks to the hot start, Jordan Murphy was named the Big Ten’s Player of the Week. Murphy has a pair of double-doubles this season and leads the Gophers with 29 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. Against Providence, Murphy scored 23 points and had 14 rebounds. He scored 15 of his points in the second half to help Minnesota rally from a 3-point halftime deficit.
The Gophers returned all five starters from last year, when they finished 24-10 overall (11-7 Big Ten) and earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. It was coach Richard Pitino’s first NCAA Tournament appearance with the Gophers. This season is Pitino’s fifth with the program.
Niagara is 1-0 this season. The Purple Eagles opened their season with a 77-75 win against St. Bonaventure. Kahlil Dukes led Niagara with 23 points. Last season, Niagara went 10-23.
Minnesota is 6-3 against MAAC teams, though the Gophers haven’t played one since 2011. They are 1-1 all-time against Niagara.
After Niagara, Minnesota has two more home games coming up. On Sunday, the Gophers play Western Carolina at 3:30 p.m. CT. That game will be on FS1. Then, Minnesota plays Alabama A&M at home at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 21. That game will be on the Big Ten Network.
