Minnesota lost to Middle Tennessee State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last week, but the program received a jolt of good news on Monday.
According to Adam Zagoria, 2017 Golden Gophers commit Isaiah Washington has been named New York State Mr. Basketball. The 4-star point guard was the No. 64 overall recruit on 247Sports, and he placed No. 14 among players at his position. Washington was the second-highest ranked player in the state of New York.
The 6-foot-2, 162-pound Bronx native is one of two Minnesota signees for the upcoming campaign. Jamir Harris, a 3-star combo guard from Elizabeth, N.J., represents the other newcomer for coach Richard Pitino. Harris and Washington, who attends St. Raymond High School for Boys, should bolster the backcourt alongside now-junior guard Nate Mason, who averaged a team-high 15.2 points per game this season.
